On this American Thanksgiving holiday, I would just like to take a brief moment to be grateful for electricity.

Ours has gone out twice already today, and it's sort of hard to explain to a three year old why the light switch doesn't work anymore and why emergency candles are not, in fact, the same as the ones you blow out on your birthday. Keeping him calm isn't that easy, either - he freaks out every few minutes when he tries to do something that doesn't work, and it totally doesn't help that I hit the panic button when the electricity goes out, too (thank you Christmas outage of 2006).

So thank you, Puget Sound Energy for light and heat and cooking. And thank you people who are out there today in the absolutely horrid weather making sure that I have light and heat and cooking.

Went to the bank, bought some Christmas shopping at gamestop (Mom decided she wants to try the Wii Zumba thing and who am I to tell her no? Especially since she decided she just doesn't care what other people think after she hit 50), came home, had a badass turkey sandwich and listened to Alice's Restaurant, turned white icicle Christmas lights into multicolored by means of a case of colored Sharpies, helped my little sister on Super Mario Galaxy by providing moral support and a blessing...

Well, today's been one of the good days. Put it like that.

I wonder how long you have to force yourself to be positive before something good happens.

People keep promising me all sorts of outlandish things would happen if I think positive. I wish whatever mechanics governed these things would give me at least a taste of something for trying so hard.

Some days, I just wonder what form of death is the most painless. Because sometimes the only thing I fear is yet another day of poverty, of working so some rat in a suit can get rich, of people like Tzor screaming from their soap boxes about how I owe them everything and I don't deserve to keep the fruits of my labors, of being openly mocked by everyone I know, of having my friends vanish in times of crisis, of being lectured about how I "hate women" and how I have a "bad attitude" when I'm doing all I can to change that, of another day of seeing the world through my crappy, worthless LD brain, of sleeping on the floor again to prepare to do it again.

Yeah, I know. This is emo and stupid. I literally don't have anywhere else I can post this without either being mocked or screamed at about how selfish I am. If you think that this board is harsh, you should hear what my family tells me when I show that I'm depressed in front of them. (Certain of my family members make Kaelik look like Mother fucking Theresa.)

I don't know about when...but I was in a similar emotional boat a few months back. It was an effort to even breathe. It hurt. I was in a store and remembered a behavioral rule I try to live by--just because I feel something doesn't mean I have to show it. So, I made a joke about some useless Seen-on-TV!!! thing in Sam's Club. My voice broke that first joke. I tried another. It went easier. Then a third one was pretty good.

Ten minutes later I was so happy-go-lucky people couldn't stand me, but I was feeling a lot better.

Things don't happen just because you think positive. There's no correlation, really. It's what you notice and how you interpret it.

So when you're down, you notice the negative which makes a spiral and...yeah.

I can't give any really meaningful advice other than "Force yourself to make a joke. Keep making them."

That and, hang in there. Don't pretend shit doesn't suck, because that's just denial. Just that law of averages dictate something should come along sooner or later.

We have $18 until Ess turns in his latest project (hopefully tomorrow) and gets paid.

With that, we had to buy some basic food necessities; supplies (lemon juice, markers, paper) and treats for my students in class, while setting aside $6 for Giovanni's weekly trip to Jamba Juice afterwards (this is a family thing - you don't mess with it).

Three things happened to help us, though... Our farm stand had three $3 boxes (they pile the ugly and slightly bruised [completely random] fruits and veggies in 15 pound boxes and sell the whole thing for $3), Ess found $5, and the art supplies I needed were on sale. Then, while we were at Trader Joe's, Giovanni found the hidden sasquatch and won a bag of gummy candy.

No, those things are not huge financial gains and shifts in economic class, but they were all awesome, and they are all gratitude-inducing. And gratitude is one of the biggest factors in positivity and happiness out there.

On Friday, I decided to buy a Wiimote+. You need it to play the new Zelda game, and I plan to swap consoles with a friend for a few months so I can play it (they have a Wii, I have a 360, and Skyward Sword should be showing up in the mail as a late birthday present in a week or so). I am not sure how to feel about the fact that the controller cost ~45 dollars after tax.

On the one hand, that seems kind of a ridiculous price tag for 1 controller I need to plug into another different controller to get everything Link needs to run around swinging his sword and shouting "Yah!". On the other, it's all that I personally am going to end up paying. And the controller is a really nice-looking shade of pink.

Wait, wait wait.

Explain this to me? I bought Skyward Sword as the "THIS IS THE ONLY THING YOU"RE GETTING FROM ME, DAMMIT' present for my little sister for Christmas.

Do we just need the little plug-in for the back, or the actual new controller?

Well, the cat is doing ok. He pissed in front of his box while my mom was cleaning up old stains she finally found in the living room on Thursday, which prompted him being thrown outside. For Good, pretty much. This didn't make me happy, since I see no reason to really blame the cat, and I'm concerned about him, even if he displays no uti symptoms other than pissing outside his box. Since I can't afford the vet visit, nor can my parents, I'm just working with what can be done, especially since there's not a lot that can be done if it isn't a uti, but rather a behavioural thing. If I have to save up over the next three or four checks for a vet visit, take a guess how long I'd have to save up for a behaviourist visit. So I was in a serious funk Thursday evening, and let him in that night after my parents went to bed because I couldn't stand hearing him cry. He was put out in the morning, but at least he didn't have to spend all night out when it got really cold, which is my main concern.

Last night, after I got in from work, I exerted the only control I have over the house, by bringing him into my room. He woke me around 6 or 7 am roaming over my bed, so I put him out, but, again, at least he didn't spend all night outside when it was coldest. I'm going to do the same tonight.

The last couple of nights when he's been inside at night after all day outside, he doesn't pee in the house, even in his box. So if this keeps up, if I don't wake up to a puddle of cat piss, maybe I can convince my parents to let him into to the house in general at nights.
Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

You need the motionplus dingus for your controller to play the game. The plug-in should work fine, but the store I was at only had wiimotes with motionplus built into them.

So, either should work for you.

Yeah, covered. I paid a hundred dollars for the wii and a big box of Stuff (TM). Two of which are motion-plus plugins.

Thanks.

Whoa, is life really that rough for some of the folks in the den?

On a more serious note, I'm thankful for getting super-lucky and getting a good (ie. one that uses my degree) job the month after I graduated, which was before my degree even arrived, and am already paying that shit forward. Of course, I'm helping somebody who says my job isn't a "real job" which makes me want to tell him to get the fuck out of my house apartment, but then he'd be living on the street.

It's incredible how ungrateful somebody can be when you offer them a place to live (and it's pretty nice, costing me 1k a month) for less than $300 a month that INCLUDES UTILITIES, TV AND INTERNET. I'm doing this because he's poor (well, he has a job that makes $13 an hour which is pretty good given a lot of people I know) and I know it sucks, but I want him to move out and he keeps spending money on stupid shit (booze, ordering out, etc) instead of living like I did when I was a poor college student. I've pointed this out a few times, but he hasn't even started looking at places to live yet. It has been a month.

I'm even letting this fucker use my car that has almost 160k miles on it because he can't get to work without it (he immediately stopped getting rides after I said "oh, you can use my car on days you really need it"). Fortunately I walk to work because I live really close, but he's actually costing me money due to utilities (never shuts anything off, ever), my car's wear and tear (he's put like, 2k miles on it in a month) and food (he eats shit I buy sometimes).

The whole situation is shitty. I'm helping him because the place he was living at got condemned. He was paying $170 a week there, along with utilities. I offered to let him stay at my place for a while until he found a new one and just asked that he pay me the tiny amount I've got him paying. He hasn't even looked for a new place and is buying more luxury shit than I am even though I'm supporting his stupid ass.

All I remember is I was really happy when I didn't have money and also didn't work much. I played video games for money and that unsteady income was less stressful than having what amounts to a 30-year-old teenager living with me when I don't worry about making rent. Oh, did I mention I'm literally fresh out of school at the ripe young age of 22 and am supporting somebody who is ten years older than me?

He's a friend of a friend who is (was? He's living as well as me now) in trouble, and I'm sure he wouldn't do the same for me. If I wasn't so certain he'd have nowhere to go I'd of kicked him out the moment he started making dumb purchases, but he'd be homeless. I'm talking to figure out where he stands on operation "Get the fuck out of my home, you mooching piece of shit," but I find it difficult to phrase my problems with him in a way that won't make him commit suicide or something. The guy is like a vampire, I just shouldn't have invited him into my place.

"Oh, I'll get out asap! I just need enough time to save up and move out!" What a fucking liar.

The moral of the story is, I wish my friend's friend wasn't such a doucheaholic. This guy isn't even trying to improve his situation and is just harming me by doing it.

Whew, that felt good.

I just wish I was helping somebody who deserved it instead of this guy, which is why tonight will likely end in "you have to leave by the end of this week" followed by him being homeless in a week. At least I tried...right?

That dude sounds just like my last roomate.

And at $13 an hour, he has no excuse to not get the fuck out. That is literally more wealth than I can imagine. He can get a fucking hotel for a couple of weeks.

Seriously, if I knew that guy, he'd be the richest guy I know. Don't let your own fortune blind you to that fact.

EDIT: My own thing: One of my coworkers is lying to try to make me look bad. I wonder what else the bitch is lying about. She wants to be an assistant manager (because jumping 3 ranks in employment is something that happens...) but her managers two layers deep can't stand her.

Also, she referred to me as "adorable" the day after I was contemplating suicide all night instead of sleeping. Dumb berk.

He's just bad with money and living in an area where cheap rent is still 600 or so a month with nothing included. He can totally afford it, he's just a lazy asshole and I get to have a talk with him soon. Also, heat gets expensive in NH around this time of year, so you're paying an extra hundred or so to not freeze to death and-- holy shit I miss not having to think about things like that; growing up is weird.

It's dumb that I have to give him a "dad talk" when he's so much older. I almost want to say "Son, it's about time you learned to live on your own."

Count, take his place. Then I can kill two birds with one stone: He gets out and I find a non-Pathfinder game.

He only has the job because his girlfriend's father got it for him, so it is not easily obtained. It's also a job that will ultimately break your back, raking concrete. I'm in the business-heavy south of NH though, everyone from MA shops here to dodge the sales tax, so jobs are plentiful (as evidenced by my lady-friend obtaining a decent [see: not minimum wage] job recently!) compared to lots of other places. Fuck yeah, NH.

Information on "the talk" for those who are interested (there will be rage):

The talk went poorly, largely because I am almost 100% certain he was spouting lies at me (that I have no way of verifying). It bothers me that he seems to think I'm stupid. I suppose I'll just mapquest the route he takes to work and determine how far out of his way he's going with MY FUCKING CAR to pick somebody up.

He admitted to picking somebody up when I asked him directly about it after setting obvious, child-like traps (moved seat far forward, adjusted headrest to maximum height, placed piece of paper in door) to figure out if somebody was sitting in the passenger's side since he had never told me he was picking people up and I suspected it. Obviously all of these things had changed, so rather than lying about picking people up he lied about where he was picking them up from in the stupidest lie ever.

"He lives really close to the work site" SO THEN WHY THE FUCK DOES HE NEED TO BE PICKED UP, YOU FUCKING IDIOT. You'd think he would say "it's somebody who lives on the route I take," but he is not that smart.

Aside from that, he said he was paying off an electric bill (for 4 weeks?) and had only saved $200. In four weeks. At $13 an hour. Paying next to nothing for rent. I'd believe he had a bill if he wasn't wasting so much money on booze, cigarettes, eating out, Christmas (which he spent $200 on, aka how much he's supposedly saved up) and making stupid grocery decisions ($12 for a steak!? I eat chicken stir fry on a bed of rice or ramen most of the time). This guy smokes a pack a day, so he's paying over $150 a month for that shit.

I told him he needs to be out by Christmas and now I'm looking at apartments for him so he can't just say he couldn't find any. Merry Christmas, motherfucker. I want my home office back.

Best of luck eliminating the mooch.

I've become a video game widow, and it's my own damned fault... I searched high and low for a computer game I thought Ess would like, and I totally succeeded! Unfortunately, Dungeons of Dredmor has become such a major part of his brain space that he carries pen and paper around the house so that when he's not doing something, he can be writing down mod ideas for the game. This has led to him taking extra time while eating, while in the bathroom, while "playing with the Boy," while we're driving down the road... And it totally doesn't help that apparently, he's tapped into a section of the game that there aren't a lot of people using, so the game developers asked him to beta test the next upgrade.
My son makes me laugh. Maybe he'll make you laugh, too.

Pack all his stuff up
put it in a box outside the apt, bring a locksmith in to change the locks.
do this while he is at work.

He doesn't have a key, so it's not like I can't force him out. I just don't want him to be homeless because then I'd feel bad. Is he a mooch? Yes. Is he a liar? Yes. Does he deserve to be homeless? Not my place to judge; I'd just rather have him out of my life.

If he hadn't seemed to industrious before he started living with me I'd of never let him in, but this was unexpected.

Edit: Thanks for the support, denizens.

Well, if you give him a reasonable amount of notice, then it's not really your fault if he becomes homeless. Assuming he's still got his job, he could pay rent. He just needs to move close enough to work that he doesn't need a car.
